How Flexible Cooler-Freezer Units Help Retailers Tackle Seasonal Demand
Help your retail customers adapt to changing seasonal demand. See how switchable cooler/freezer units can provide more flexibility from the same display space.
24 September 2026

Your retail customers often need more frozen display space for ice cream during warm weather, more chilled capacity for the Christmas season and an entirely different mix for promotional offers.
Buying a dedicated cabinet for every peak or fluctuation leaves equipment underused once demand changes. Whereas switchable cooler/freezers allows the same units to support chilled or frozen ranges at different times throughout the year.
As their UK refrigeration supplier, you have the power to help them decide whether that flexibility would provide more value than another single-purpose cabinet.
With more than 40 years’ experience in the commercial refrigeration sector, TEFCOLD UK supplies switchable units in a range of formats and capacities, backed by both service and spare parts support. Discover how these units help your customers adapt to seasonal demand – and a 'checklist' around recommending them.
What is a switchable cooler/freezer?
A switchable cooler/freezer is a unit which can operate in either chilled or frozen mode within its stated temperature ranges.
When retailer wants to switch between modes they will empty the unit, changes its setting and allows it to reach the new temperature before reloading it. You can learn more about this principle in our introduction to the EIB cooler/freezer range.
Switchable refrigeration is particularly useful when your customer’s demand for chilled and frozen products peaks at different times of the year.

What are the benefits of using a switchable cooler/freezer in seasonal storage
The same switchable cabinet could hold different items at varying strategic parts of the year:
- Ice cream and frozen desserts during hot summers
- Chilled drinks, salads and meal-deal products
- Frozen turkeys, desserts and party food ready for Christmas
- Chilled meat, dairy and prepared food
- Limited-edition products and promotional lines
- Everyday chilled or frozen stock between campaigns
This allows the retailer to maximise seasonal storage space. They can also test new chilled or frozen ranges before investing fully in dedicated equipment. It's important to note that where there are overlaps in peaks more units or seperate cabinets may be required.
Respond to promotions and changing demand
Seasonal demand doesn’t always follow the calendar in an exact pattern. Warm weather that lasts (such as our recent heatwaves), a supplier promotion or a new product launch can change up the required product mix.
An impulse cooler/freezer gives your customer a way to respond and fast. For example, the EIB-D1010-B1 can operate between -18 °C and 5 °C which gives you access to both cooling and freezing options, it just depends on the products your customers wish to sell.
The shop can present the products in a stylish way, all thanks to glass sides, sliding lids and interior lighting. What's more it comes with braked castors for easy mobility, great if you want to change up the display space. The EIB range comes in three sizes, helping you match the cabinet to your customer’s available space and expected stock volume.

Smart Solutions to Expand Display Capacity in Limited Spaces
Increase display capacity without using more floor space...Switchable units can also form part of a larger retail layout. The SFI switchable supermarket cooler/freezer provides a glass-lidded lower display. Optional multiplexing kits mean retailers can go one step further and combine compatible units into an island.
Retailers often combine a compatible, size-matched SFI cabinet with an MTF top-section freezer/chiller. The MTF sits above the lower cabinet, adding shelved display capacity without taking up even more floor space giving you lots of display space in one area at the 2 height levels. As each cabinet is switchable, the retailer can set the upper and lower displays to suit their unique product mix.
In terms of a checklist you’ll need to confirm cabinet compatibility, dimensions, access and installation requirements. MTF units require stand assembly and lifting, so ensure your customers plan fully for UK delivery and installation.

The Essential Checklist for Recommending a Switchable Cooler/Freezer
Ask your customer the following questions:
- When do their chilled and frozen sales peak?
- Do those seasonal peaks overlap?
- Which products are they storing and what temperatures do they require?
- How much storage capacity and display area do they need?
- Does the proposed location meet the model’s ambient temperature and ventilation requirements?
- Where will the stock go during a changeover?
You should then compare the cabinet’s temperature range, climate class, cooling system, dimensions, energy consumption and installation requirements. Our useful choosing a commercial freezer selection guide covers more of the factors to discuss with your customers.
Planning stock switchovers for peak seasons
Ensure seamless switching between cooler and freezer modes with proper planning.
Your customer needs suitable temporary storage during each changeover to avoid wasted stock. They should remove the existing stock, clean the cabinet and follow the manufacturer’s instructions before selecting the new mode.
They’ll then need to let the cabinet stabilise at the required temperature before reloading it. Ensure they plan the changeover so that it doesn’t create extra work during a busy trading period.
Choose the ideal switchable refrigeration system for your client's business.
