Energy ratings coming soon - MEPS

As consumers we are all used to seeing energy ratings on lots of electrical products and other goods. Ovens, light bulbs, dishwashers, televisions, cars are among some of the products and even houses are now energy rated. They are all given a rating generally from A to G with A being the most energy efficient.

From 1st July 2016 energy ratings are going to be applied to some commercial refrigeration units. This will be known as MEPS - Minimum Energy Performance Standard. This will ensure than all units meet a minimum level of energy usage under certain test criteria

Initially this will only apply to fan assisted storage fridges and freezers. (Not including coldrooms, remote refrigeration units or custom made one off units). If a unit does not meet the minimum standard it cannot be sold in the EU.

Any applicable cabinet that is sold within the EU (regardless of where it is made) has to clearly show its energy rating wherever it is being advertised. Initially the highest rating will be A, but over time A+ and A++ ratings will be introduced. The minimum which initally will be G, is also likely to be raised over time. (So the G rating may be removed so the minimum available for sales would then be F rated). This will help enocourage development by manufacturers to produce more efficient products.

Other types of refrigeration (display, serve overs, multidecks etc are likely to be phased in from 2017 and onwards

At Interlevin we have been working closely with manufacturers to ensure all relevant product will be correctly rated and labelled as required. Many of our cabinets already reach a high rating but we are working with certain manufacturers to make sure the best rating is available to give a wide choice to our customers.

As ever we will be supporting our distributor network and supplying data and information to enable them to update brochures and websites with all the relevant information needed in plenty of time for the launch.  If you are a distributor and have a website and/or leaflets catalogues printed - it is your responsibility to make sure you are displaying correct information and complying with legislation.
